While working at GTE in the 1990's, the GTE corporate labor negotiators and employee representatives agreed to disregard the Veterans Day holiday of November 11th. They decided to have a floating holiday instead which effectively hollowed out the meaning of Veterans Day. Dozens of letters protesting this change were sent from employees to GTE's corporate management, but they were ignored. Hugh Fleet decided to stand up for those who had fallen on our behalf and contacted U.S.Congressman Jack Metcalf from the Second Congressional district.
After a six year long battle, Hugh achieved his objective to honor veterans with the construction of a Veterans memorial on GTE (Verizon) campus in Everett, Washington and another in Beaverton, Oregon. On the day of the dedication of the memorial in Everett, Hugh thanked those who had helped by stating: "Victory has a 100 fathers and defeat is an orphan" The picture shows (left to right) Eileen Odem (President of GTNW), Hugh Fleet, Jack Metcalf (U.S. Second Congressional Dist) and Kirk Pearson (State Representative 39th), on the day of the dedication in Everett. Hugh Fleet is not afraid to roll up his sleeves and work hard for those who need a voice in government, and he is the type of person you need working for you in Olympia.
